It's come to my attention that after living in my current apartment for close to three years that my neighborhood has some pretty spectacular options for food. Bushwick, Brooklyn is currently a hotbed for struggling artists (including myself) and a plethora of specialty food places, restaurants, and cafes.
Heading east from Manhattan, you'll immediately hit Williamsburg (hyper-developed, with many boutiques and restaurants), and then you will come across a weird post-industrial/up-and-coming residential neighborhood. Some say it's East Williamsburg, some say it's Bushwick--geographic terminology is still being configured. NYC real estate can be quite contentious.
Getting off the L train at the Morgan stop you'll be confronted by broad streets with large industrial workshops, impressive graffiti, and some small but prosperous bodegas. A closer examination, a quick tip, might get you into Roberta's, Bushwick's infamous pizza joint--its most famous clientele being the Clintons. There's a really hidden asian fusion restaurant called Momo, I recommend their pork belly.
One of my favorite places to get the best doughnut in the city (by Dough Doughnuts) is three blocks away from my apartment at a bar called The Cobra Club.
If you're in the area, I definitely recommend taking a walk around and finding some of many hidden food gems.
