Lone Fir Cemetery

Situated in the South East quarter of Portland is a remarkable historical cemetery known as Lone Fir.  I love coming across historical cemeteries, because they offer such rich insights to history in a direct and informative manner.  I've seen Richmond, VA's Hollywood Cemetery and New York's Greenwood, but Lone Fir is different, because it tells a tale directly to Portland's roots.

Established in 1855, the 30 acre site includes old and new headstones.  It seemed that people, from many diverse backgrounds, were placed there.  I think it's interesting to consider the changes of immigration patterns that can affect a region.  Lone Fir featured head stones that I haven't come across, such as craved spheres.  John mentioned that one contemporary grave featured a carved Scrabble board game.  Unfortunately we didn't come across that particular site, but our goal was to briefly walk through grounds, especially since a storm was coming in.  We actually got briefly trapped in a bus shelter during a passing hail storm.

I hope to go back soon to Lone Fir and report on the historical features the cemetery offers.  Take a look at some of my photos:
