Milwaukee

My road trip included a trip to Wisconsin where I was lucky enough to revisit  the Milwaukee Art Museum (previously I was on a layover in Summer 2010).  I was extra lucky to catch the last day of the exhibition 30 Americans: Rubell Family Collection, featuring 30 prominent contemporary and modern African American artists.  My favorite contemporary artist, Kara Walker was included -- check out the Art:21 feature of her below.

Milwaukee's art museum, besides the outstanding temporary exhibition, included an amazing permanent collection.  My time from The Frick Collection made me appreciate the superb pairing of Jean-Honoré Fragonard with contemporary artist Yinka Shonibare.  18th Century meets the 21st Century; where globalization, colonization, and art diverge in an interesting apex.

The more I continue see museums around the country the more I'm developing my knowledge and appreciation of the great culture within our country.  Despite the dismissive attitude of some congressional leaders who think museums are fine being closed by the government shut down, Americans should continue to invest in the culture directly in front of them.  Not ignore them.  But that's just my little tid-bit this week.  Anyway, Milwaukee was a surprising pleasure and I hope it thrives and continues to share it's wonderful collection.
